Discovering Local Art and Culture in Hong Kong: Bamboo Craftsmanship

In traditional Chinese culture, bamboo has always been a symbol of integrity and humility, represented by the “Four Gentlemen” of plum blossom, orchid, bamboo, and chrysanthemum. It has a tall and slender form that bends but does not break. This characteristic has inspired artists to incorporate its qualities into their artwork.

However, the art of bamboo crafts is facing challenges in Hong Kong due to the fast pace of city life. Even though the industrial sector has declined, contemporary bamboo craftsmen continue to create art and believe there is still potential for the industry to thrive, just like in Japan.

Challenges Faced by Industries in Hong Kong

Contemporary bamboo craftsman Ting For Chun Angus has designed material kits to promote traditional bamboo crafts, encouraging more people to learn about this art form. Local bamboo crafts have also been integrated into modern society, such as bird cages, lion heads used in festive celebrations, and steamers. Hong Kong’s bamboo crafts are more closely related to the southern style of craftsmanship, reflecting the lifestyle of people living in coastal area.

The difficulties in passing on this traditional craft are not only due to the younger generation not taking up the trade but also because most bamboo suppliers in Hong Kong have closed down, making it difficult for craftsmen to obtain fresh bamboo.

Enriching the Collection: Hong Kong Bamboo Craftswoman Liu Mei Yee’s Masterpiece ‘Red Leaves’

Recently, the Victoria and Albert Museum in the UK acquired the bamboo craftwork “Red Leaves,” created by Hong Kong bamboo craftsman Lau Mei Yee Vicky. According to an interview by Sing Tao Daily, Lau Mei Yi Vicky was delighted with the acquisition and credited the support of various organizations, such as Crafts on Peel.

Bamboo crafts can be more than just practical objects; they can become elegant works of art, continuing to pass on this folk wisdom.
